| Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ Cet article aborde le débat sur Rome capitale (1861-1871) dans la perspective d’une étude territoriale de la construction nationale italienne. Le choix de localisation de la capitale est interprété en s’inspirant des thèses de D. Mack Smith comme la reprise cavourienne du choix spatial du Risorgimento démocratique vidé de son contenu politique et comme facteur de la victoire du Risorgimento monarchique. Le débat parlementaire et d’opinion est également analysé comme un révélateur des représentations du territoire italien au moment de l’unification. La conception d’une Italie polycentrique, terre d’histoire traversée par la question méridionale, conduit au choix de Rome comme capitale historique, capitale charnière et capitale neutre. Cette logique de désignation constitue un élément d’explication des difficultés que connaît la " Ville Éternelle " après 1871. |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT This article treats the debate on Rome as capital city (1861-1871) with an outlook for the territorial study of the Italian nation making. Determining the capital city localization can be read according to the thesis of D. Mack Smith, both as a Cavourian spatial choice of democratic Risorgimento emptied of its political content and a victory factor of the monarchic Risorgimento. The parliamentary debate as well as the public debate reveal the representations of the Italian territory at the time of the unification. The vision of a polycentric State and the Southern Italy issue lead to the choice of Rome regarded as an historical and neutral capital city and as a bridge between northern and southern Italy. These logics of location explain the difficulties occurred to the " Eternal City " after 1871. |
