| Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉLa rencontre Brejnev-Nixon à Moscou en mai 1972 est entrée dans l’histoire comme un tournant de la guerre froide, mettant fin à une période de tensions et d’incertitudes. Inaugurant l’ère dite de la « détente » entre les États-Unis et l’URSS, elle amorce en même temps un véritable tournant culturel mesurable au travers des discours privés et publics. Ce tournant culturel participe d’une mutation de la représentation traditionnelle des États-Unis dans les médias. Préparé et attendu par un certain nombre de décideurs et d’institutions, comme par de nombreux exécutants de la vaste machine de propagande soviétique, il ne réussit cependant pas à confirmer les espoirs placés en lui. Le divorce entre l’État et la société n’est pas résorbé, bien au contraire ; les contradictions entre les attentes des uns et des autres demeurent trop nombreuses. La détente est, dès lors, vouée à l’échec. |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT The meeting of Brezhnev and Nixon in Moscow in May 1972 became a turning point in the history of the Cold War, closing an era of tensions and uncertainties. Starting the so-called era of détente between the United States and the USSR, it also launched a genuine cultural turnabout which can be traced in public and private speeches. This cultural turnabout was to end the traditional representation of America in the media. Long awaited and prepared by certain political agents and institutions, as well as numerous representatives of the Soviet propaganda machine, it failed to realize the hopes of the proponents. The gap between the state and society remained and even amplified ; contradictions between the expectations of both parties were too numerous. Détente was then destined to fail. |
