520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | This article discusses the historiographical assumption that the unification of the Low Countries in the fourteenth and fifteenth century caused the nobility of the involved principalities to merge to a ‘Dutch nobility.’An analysis of noble immigration in the county of Flanders between 1350 and 1500 shows that this perspective does not hold up to close scrutin y. The nobility already cultivated interregional networks long before the rise of the Burgundian-Habsburgh state in the Low Countries. Those networks were influenced by state formation, but they were first and foremost the result of the tendency towards social endogamy among noble elites. As such, the birth of the ‘Dutch nobility’ in the later Middle Ages should be considered as an ideological process, rather than a social one. |
