| Summary, etc. | RésuméConsidérés comme une anomalie institutionnelle, les maréchaux de France choisis par le duc de Mayenne au temps de la Ligue ont souvent été négligés par l’historiographie. Leur illégalité présumée est soulignée par le fait que nombre d’entre eux se rallièrent à Henri IV, qui les confirma dans leur dignité, faisant d’eux des « bâtards légitimés ». Cependant, au-delà de ce rejet historiographique du vainqueur, la question des maréchaux de la Ligue aide à mieux connaître les raisons sociales et institutionnelles qui aboutirent à une telle « dissidence ». Le devenir de ces maréchaux, dont le nombre exact a curieusement échappé à la plupart des auteurs s’étant intéressés de près ou de loin à ce problème, met en évidence la diversité des manières de mettre fin à la guerre civile. |

| Summary, etc. | Regarded as an institutional anomaly, the marshals of France chosen by the Duke of Mayenne, when he was the leader of the League, were often ignored by historiography. Their supposed illegality is underlined by the fact that some of them rejoined Henry IV. This king confirmed them as marshals of France, becoming “legitimated bastards”. Despite this historiographical position, the study of the marshals of the League helps us to improve our knowledge of the social and institutional reasons which led to this “dissidence”. The destiny of these marshals, whose exact number is generally unknown, shows us the numerous ways to the end of the civil war in the 1590’s. |
