| Summary, etc. | Résumé Alors que la première modernité est traditionnellement présentée comme le « crépuscule de la chevalerie », le nombre et la diffusion des romans de chevalerie n’ont jamais été aussi importants. Paradoxalement, alors que les liens entre histoire et politique ont été l’objet de l’intérêt des historiens ; celui entre littérature et politique demeure peu étudié. Pourtant, les littéraires, telles qu’Emmanuelle Poulain Gautret et Élisabeth Gaucher, ont récemment démontré la dimension politique de la littérature chevaleresque de la fin du Moyen Âge. Cette littérature connaît depuis ses origines des mouvements de réécritures incessants qui lui permettent de survivre tout en s’adaptant aux évolutions de la société. Les traductions en prose et le passage du manuscrit à l’imprimé sont l’occasion, au cours du xv e siècle et de la première moitié du xvi e siècle, d’une redécouverte de la culture chevaleresque avec les yeux de la Renaissance. L’étude des prologues des romans issus des anciennes chansons de geste permet de saisir quels sont les pratiques, les fonctions et les enjeux de la transmission de la culture chevaleresque dans une noblesse confrontée à la genèse de l’État moderne, à la concurrence de la Robe et de la bourgeoisie, et aux critiques de plus en plus acerbes de sa position de domination. |

| Summary, etc. | While Renaissance is traditionally described as the twilight of chivalry, the number and circulation of chivalric novels have never been so great. It is a paradox that, while the links between politics and history have always been a central concern to historians, those between literature and politics have not. And yet, literary scholars, such as Emmanuelle Poulain Gautret and Elisabeth Gaucher, have recently proven that chivalric literature already had an important political significance by the late Middle Ages. From its beginnings, this literature has suffered ceaseless revisions in order to adapt to the society’s evolutions and survive. The translations into prose and the transition from manuscript to printed book were, between the end of the xv th century and the beginning of the xvi th century, the occasion for a rediscovery of the chivalric culture through the eyes of the Renaissance. The study of the prologues of novels derived from former chanson de geste makes it possible to understand the practice, functions, and stakes in the chivalric culture’s transmission for a nobility confronted with the « the construction of the modern State », the competition of the legal profession and the upper middle class, and with the critics of it social domination. |
