| Summary, etc. | En juillet 1470, Louis XI concède à Jean VI Malet de Graville le droit de réunir une foire annuelle à Châtres-sous-Montlhéry. Des points de vue institutionnel, juridique et économique rien ne semble contrevenir à l’établissement de ce rassemblement commercial au sud de Paris. Pourtant, en avril 1471 l’administration royale n’a toujours pas enregistré la lettre patente instituant la foire et ordonne une enquête de commodo et incommodo afin de s’informer de son bien-fondé et de définir les droits et franchises du seigneur de Graville. S’engage alors entre le requérant, prisonnier d’Édouard IV à Londres, son fils Louis, le roi et son administration un bras de fer qui ne prendra fin qu’en 1475, lorsque Louis XI va imposer un entérinement partiel de la lettre patente.Le dossier documentaire, exceptionnellement bien conservé, renferme l’enquête diligentée par le prévôt de Paris et les échanges épistolaires entre les protagonistes de la demande d’enregistrement. Il témoigne d’une administration gardienne du domaine royal et de ses propres privilèges, des conflits d’intérêt qui peuvent s’y jouer voire des enjeux politico-économiques qui peuvent sous-tendre la concession d’un privilège par le roi. |

| Summary, etc. | In July 1470 Louis XI granted Jean VI Malet de Graville the permission to hold an annual fair at Châtres-sous-Montlhéry. From the institutional, legal and economic points of view nothing seemed to prevent the establishment of this commercial gathering in the south of Paris. Nevertheless, in April 1471, the Letter Patent establishing the fair had not yet been recorded by the royal administration, who ordered a commodo et incommodo survey to enquire about the legitimacy of the request and to define Lord Graville’s rights and franchise. The applicant (prisoner of Edward IV in London) and his son, Louis, then began a struggle with the French king and his administration – a struggle which was to come to an end in 1475, when Louis XI imposed a partial endorsement of the Patent Letter.The archives of this affair, exceptionally well preserved, contain the survey ordered by the Provost of Paris and the letters exchanged between the protagonists of the endorsement request. It shows an administration, which was keen to preserve the royal domain and its own privileges, and it reveals the underlying conflicts of interest, and even the political and economic issues at stake when a privilege was granted by the King. |
