| Summary, etc. | L’apparence extérieure d’un empereur fait partie des critères qui fondent sa légitimité. Dans le cas d’Élagabal (218-222), les auteurs antiques, et en particulier Hérodien, ont porté une attention particulière à ses goûts vestimentaires et insistent volontiers sur son accoutrement, qualifié de barbare, et convenant davantage à une femme qu’à un homme. Le port ostentatoire de vêtements en soie, de couleur pourpre et or, et de longues tuniques couvrant ses bras et ses jambes, dénote un goût pour le luxe peu compatible avec la simplicité affectée par Auguste, le fondateur du régime. Les parures de bijoux de prix, les couronnes d’or et de pierres précieuses et le maquillage, tout concourt à faire d’Élagabal une figure contraire aux attentes des Romains et à expliquer, au moins en partie, le rejet dont il fit l’objet. |

| Summary, etc. | The exterior appearance of a Roman emperor is one of the criteria that underpins his legitimacy. In the case of Elagabalus (218-222), the ancient authors, and especially Herodian, paid particular attention to his clothing tastes and willingly insist on his outfit, described as barbaric, and more suitable for a woman than for a man. The ostentatious port of silk clothing, purple and gold, and long tunics covering his arms and legs, denotes a taste for luxury that is not compatible with the simplicity affected by Augustus, the founder of the Principate. Costume jewelry, gold and gemstone crowns and make-up, all this contributes to making Elagabalus a figure contrary to the expectations of the Romans and to explain, at least in part, why he has been rejected by his subjects. |
