Summary, etc. | À partir d’exemples pris dans toutes les périodes de l’histoire, cet article, qui introduit le dossier « Prendre la route », propose différentes pistes de recherche pour une analyse des usages sociaux de la route. Qui trouvait-on sur les chemins dans les sociétés du monde occidental et comment la rencontre entre les différentes catégories sociales s’effectuait-elle ? Selon quels critères les itinéraires étaient-ils choisis ou même imposés : rang, classe, genre ou fonction ? Quels objets, quels équipages accompagnaient les voyageurs ? Quel savoir de la route était accessible ? Et de quel sens la route était-elle investie ? Depuis l’Antiquité, les romans l’ont prise comme décor privilégié parce qu’elle incarnait un parfait sociotope, le lieu par excellence où pouvaient à la fois se rencontrer des gens normalement séparés par la hiérarchie sociale ou par l’espace, et s’afficher la division sociale, où se mêlaient les destinées et où se nouaient des intrigues. Il revient à l’historien de relire ces récits à l’aune d’autres sources, pour mettre la mobilité à l’épreuve de la différenciation sociale, et, au-delà d’une étude des pratiques, poser la question de la justice spatiale. Si l’espace est naturellement commun, en effet, il se voit souvent « qualifié » par les personnes qui s’y déplacent, et son accès peut faire l’objet de tensions et de conflits, voire d’abus de pouvoir. |

Summary, etc. | Based on examples taken from all periods of history, this article, which introduces the dossier, proposes different lines of research for an analysis of the social uses of the road. Who was found on the roads in the societies of the Western world, and how did the meeting between the different social categories take place? According to what criteria were routes chosen or even imposed: rank, class, gender or function? What objects did the travelers take with them? What knowledge was accessible? And for what purpose, with what imaginary was the road taken? Since antiquity, novels have taken it as a privileged setting because it embodied a perfect “sociotope”, the place par excellence where people normally separated by social hierarchy or by space could meet and at the same time ostentatiously display social division, where destinies mingled and intrigues were woven. It is up to the historian to reread these narratives in the light of other sources, to put mobility to the test of social differentiation, and, beyond a study of practices, to pose the question of spatial justice. Although space is naturally common, it is often “qualified” by the people who move in it and access to it can be subject to tension and conflict, even abuse of power. |
