| Summary, etc. | RésuméBâtonnier du barreau de Paris de 1938 à 1945, Jacques Charpentier (1881-1974) est une figure complexe et controversée. Sous sa présidence, le conseil de l’Ordre applique la législation xénophobe et antisémite de l’État français, qui exclut du barreau plusieurs centaines d’avocats. Mais il marque aussi sa volonté d’indépendance. À partir de 1943, il agit de concert avec les résistants du Front national judiciaire (FNJ), mouvement animé par son confrère Joë Nordmann, puis passe dans la clandestinité et participe activement à la Résistance judiciaire. |

| Summary, etc. | Jacques Charpentier, President of the Bar – from the Vichy regime to the ResistancePresident of the Paris Bar from 1938 to 1945, Jacques Charpentier (1881-1974) was a complex and controversial figure. During Charpentier’s office, the Bar Council implemented the xenophobic and anti-Semitic laws of the French state, consequently disbarring hundreds of lawyers. Thus, from 1943 Jacques Charpentier joined the resistants of the Lawyers’ National Front (FNJ), whose leader was Joë Nordmann. Then he decided to go underground and to participate actively in the judicial Resistance. |
