| Summary, etc. | Les archives d’État de Turin conservent dans leurs fonds deux volumes figurant 167 représentations des drapeaux des troupes royales capturés par les Espagnols au cours de la bataille et du siège de Saint-Quentin en 1557. L’étude de leur histoire et de leurs détails permet d’approcher l’engagement en guerre de leurs porteurs et plus largement de tous les combattants servant sous leurs plis. Cet article propose de suivre la mise sur pied de l’armée commandée par le connétable Anne de Montmorency à travers le recensement et la confection des drapeaux. Ceux-ci appartiennent avant tout à des capitaines en charge au nord du royaume ou proches des principaux responsables des opérations que sont les Montmorency et la famille de Bourbon. Si leurs couleurs et dessins mobilisent l’art et le savoir d’artisans reconnus, ils reflètent les questions et troubles du temps, de l’humanisme au souci de la protection divine jusqu’au souffle de la Réforme, signes de projection des combattants dans le futur. Cependant, tous ces drapeaux sont associés au désastre militaire français par leur capture. De fait, ainsi soustraits à leurs anciens propriétaires, ils offrent un instantané sur leurs conditions d’engagements armés et plus encore sur leurs représentations et leurs croyances. L’enjeu de cet article est bien d’approcher un ensemble de trajectoires individuelles et collectives vécues au milieu du xvie siècle, celui des combattants au service du roi Henri II, au moment où le royaume de France toujours en guerre connaît une démonstration plus affirmée du culte réformé. |

| Summary, etc. | The State Archives of Turin keep in their bottom two volumes featuring 167 representations of the flags of the royal troops captured by the Spaniards during the battle and the siege of Saint-Quentin in 1557. The study of their histories and details allow us to approach the war engagement of their carriers and more broadly of all the combatants serving under their folds. This article proposes to follow the establishment of the army commanded by Constable Anne de Montmorency through the census and the making of flags. These belong above all to captains in charge in the north of the kingdom or close to the main operations managers, namely the Montmorency family and the Bourbon family. If their colors and designs mobilize the art and knowledge of recognized craftsmen, they reflect the questions and troubles of the time, from humanism to the concern for divine protection until the breath of the Reformation, signs of projection of the combatants in the future. However, all of these flags are associated with the French military disaster by their capture. In fact, thus removed from their former owners, they offer a snapshot of their terms of armed engagement and even more of their representations and beliefs. The aim of this article is to approach a set of individual and collective trajectories experienced in the middle of the 16th century, that of combatants in the service of King Henry II, at a time when the kingdom of France, still at war, experienced a more assertive demonstration of Reformed worship. |
