| Summary, etc. | The Other Justice of the Dictionnaire philosophiqueThe most widely known writer in Europe, Voltaire (1694-1778), became from 1750 the greatest advocate for the oppressed of the Ancien Régime society. Horrified by the scandalous legal affairs that led to the death of Jean Calas or the young knight of La Barre, he used his literary talent to educate society. Using a few words from the Dictionnaire philosophique, he built a body of thinking centred on a reform of the criminal procedure in order to prepare society for another type of justice. |
