Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Jules Durand was sentenced to death by the Assize Court of Rouen on 29 November 1910. The Durand case began with an accusation made against this trade unionist and leader of the dockers at the port of Le Havre, after the death of a non-striking docker, Dongé, on 9 September 1910, during an alcohol-fuelled altercation against the backdrop of a strike called against the Compagnie générale transatlantique, which was seeking to mechanise the work of coal-porters. Durand was not directly involved in the events, but he was accused of murder – the most serious category of homicide – for provoking Dongé’s death. The judicial review process made it clear that the sentence was the result of machinations conducted by the Compagnie générale transatlantique against the union, and showed the extent to which justice could be subject to influence. The review of his trial, carried out thanks to the efforts of MP and lawyer Paul Meunier and the pressure of a segment of public opinion, resulted in the rehabilitation of Jules Durand by the Court of Cassation on 15 June 1918, but with no great compensation awarded to his family. His conviction had already driven him insane, however. |
