| Summary, etc. | Cet article a pour objet d’étudier les effets de la crise de la République sur l’ ethos aristocratique, à partir de l’exemple du rapprochement entre Caton d’Utique et Pompée, survenu au début de l’année 52 av. J.-C. L’ ethos de Caton était orienté par la défense intransigeante de la République aristocratique, ce qui rendait problématique le rapprochement avec celui qui, plus que tout autre, symbolisait le processus de personnalisation du pouvoir. Il s’y résolut lorsqu’il apporta son soutien à la proposition de Bibulus de conférer un consulat unique à Pompée. La préservation de son ethos requit les stratégies suivantes : discours de justification et, surtout, manifestation de sa liberté politique, y compris et peut-être surtout lorsque cette dernière allait à l’encontre des intérêts de Pompée. La stratégie parut payante : Caton conserva son ethos, si l’on en juge par les témoignages de ses contemporains et des sources postérieures. Elle n’en révèle pas moins le processus de subordination d’une aristocratie contrainte de s’en remettre au pouvoir d’un seul et les limites d’une stratégie de préservation de l’ ethos, qui l’emporte sur la défense pragmatique de la République sénatoriale. |

| Summary, etc. | This article examines the effects of the crisis of the Republic on the aristocratic ethos, using the example of the rapprochement between Cato of Utica and Pompey, which took place in early 52 BC. Cato’s ethos was oriented by the intransigent defence of the aristocratic Republic, which made the rapprochement with the one who, more than any other, symbolised the process of personalisation of power, problematic. He resolved to do so when he supported Bibulus’ proposal to confer a single consulship on Pompey. The preservation of his ethos required the following strategies: a speech of justification and, above all, the manifestation of his political freedom, including and perhaps especially when it ran counter to Pompey’s interests. The strategy paid off: Cato retained his ethos, judging by the testimonies of his contemporaries and later sources. It nevertheless reveals the process of subordination of an aristocracy forced to rely on the power of one, and the limits of a strategy of ethos preservation, which outweighs the pragmatic defence of the senatorial republic. |
