| Summary, etc. | Pour en finir avec la Terreur, l’ambition fut de reconfigurer le gouvernement révolutionnaire, et parfois de s’attaquer aux hommes qui ont assuré son fonctionnement. L’épuration de ce Léviathan administratif n’a pourtant jamais eu lieu à l’échelle centrale (des commissions exécutives et des comités législatifs) : elle s’est, au mieux, faite à petites touches, au gré des restructurations successives du « gouvernement révolutionnaire », devenu « gouvernement provisoire » de la République. C’est cette épuration qu’il s’agira de comprendre par l’étude des deux commissions qui en ont été chargées : la commission des Seize, créée le 13 frimaire an iii (4 décembre 1794) pour réformer les commissions exécutives, et la commission des Dix-sept, créée le 16 vendémiaire an iv (8 octobre) pour destituer les employés des comités, commissions, agences et administrations établies à Paris, suspects d’avoir sinon participé, du moins cautionné la prise d’armes « royaliste » contre la représentation nationale. |

| Summary, etc. | To put an end to the Reign of Terror once and for all, the ambition was to reconfigure the revolutionary government, and in some cases, to attack the men who had run it. And yet the purging of this administrative Leviathan never happened at the central level (i. e. the executive commissions and the legislative committees) : at best it took place gradually with the successive restructuring of the « revolutionary government », which became the « provisional government » of the Republic. It is this purge that we will attempt to understand by studying the two commissions that were put in charge of it : the Commission of Sixteen ; created on 13 Frimaire, Year iii (4 December 1794) to reform the executive commissions, and the Commission of Seventeen, created on 16 Vendemiaire, Year iv (8 October) to remove the employees of the committees, commissions, agencies and administrative bodies set up in Paris, who were suspected if not of having taken part, at least of having supported the « royalist » insurrection against the National Convention. |
