| Summary, etc. | Jean-Pierre MARBY Le livre de raison de Ponce Millet, 1673-1725 Le livre de raison de Ponce Millet offre à l’historien un nouveau morceau de cette chair fraîchechère à Marc Bloch: il apporte le témoi~gnage d’un fils de manouvrier de Champagne septentrionale à la charnière des XVIIe et XVIIIesiècles. Expression de l’écriture privée la plus intime,le texte constitue l’histoire d’une vie. À la fois chronique familiale,registre de comptes et carnet d’adresses, ce témoignage présente la trajectoire personnelle d’un quasi-anonyme:le parcours singulier d’un homme ordinaire. Successivement pâtre,domestique urbain,secré~taire, colporteur, relieur, moissonneur, Ponce Millet est un véritable sédentaire~voyageur,sym~bole de la pluriactivité,pratiquant conjointement et sans complexe les activités rurales et urbaines du temps. La réussite sociale de l’auteur est patente, or celle-ci a un prix. Outre le prix du travail, Ponce Millet consigne le prix des choses quotidiennes et ordinaires. Cependant, témoin, acteur et agent de propagande du jansénisme populaire champenois, l’auteur connaît de sur~croît le poids et le prix du péché, toujours prêt à écouter le diable et à succomber à ses propres démons.Autonomie de l’individu et souffle de liberté (René Taveneaux) font décidément de Ponce Millet un sacré bonhomme. |

| Summary, etc. | Ponce Millet’s descriptive text offers to the historian a quantity of fresh flesh as is dear to Marc Bloch: it brings to us the witness of day to day life as experienced by the son of a labou~rer in the northern sector of the Champagne region in France.An expression of private wri~ting wholly intimate, the text constitutes the author’s life history. At once and at the same time family chronical, address, and allounts book, the contents present the personal trajec~tory of an almost anonymous person:the sin~gular life of an ordinary man. Successively shepherd, servant, clerk, peddler, bookbinder, reaper, Ponce Millet is a true static-voyager, symbol of plurality in activities, practising conjointly without complex both rural and urban occupations of the time.The social suc~cess of the author is evident,but this at a price. Beyond the costs of everyday and ordinary things, Ponce Millet writes on the real human costs of work... However, witness, actor, pro~pagandist of popular Champagne jansenism, the author knows also the burden and cost of sin...
