520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | In 1773, Swedish King Gustaf III, who was passionate about theatre and ballet, created a national opera sung in Swedish. In so doing, he had an efficient means of communication at his disposal, allowing him to convey a certain number of ideas dear to his heart. First, he tried to legitimize royal power, strengthened by his coup in 1772, and to stress the monarchy’s enlightened character. Through opera, he also intended to celebrate the nation’s history and its great tutelary figures. The lyrical tragedy Gustaf Wasa (1786) became the most ambitious and monumental project Gustaf III collaborated on personally. This article studies Gustaf Wasa, applying concepts from propaganda theories, in order to show how the monarchy used the work to promote its foreign policy. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
