| Summary, etc. | Dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle à Montréal, Olivier Berthelet, un bourgeois canadien-français, fonde l’Hospice Saint-Joseph de Montréal. Il passe par la suite aux mains des Sœurs Grises qui y accueillent principalement des « orphelines ». Dans le cadre de la société patriarcale, où les femmes sont généralement reléguées à la sphère privée, ces sœurs parviennent néanmoins à administrer leur institution. Elles offrent aux nombreux enfants qu’elles accueillent dans des conditions précaires, un toit, de la nourriture, une vie disciplinée réglée par la religion catholique et fondée sur une éducation qui respecte les valeurs associées au rôle « maternel » des femmes et à la hiérarchie des classes sociales. Bien que les sœurs y respectent ces valeurs promulguées par les élites de l’époque, l’hospice ne s’est pas révélé être une institution d’enfermement qui visait principalement à discipliner les familles pauvres, mais plutôt un lieu ouvert, qui tentait de s’adapter aux besoins matériels, familiaux, éducatifs et spirituels des familles. |

| Summary, etc. | In Montreal, in the second half of the 19th century, Olivier Berthelet, a French-Canadian bourgeois, founded the Hospice St. Joseph of Montreal. Afterward, it is managed by the Grey Nuns, who mostly welcome “orphans”. In the context of a patriarchal society, where women are generally relegated to the private sphere, these nuns still manage to administer their institution. They offer to the many children they welcome in precarious conditions : shelter, food, a disciplined life based on the Catholic religion and on an education that respects the values associated with the maternal role of women and hierarchy of social classes. While the nuns respected these values promulgated by the elites of the time, the hospice has not proved to be an institution of confinement which focused on disciplining poor families, but rather was an open place, which attempted to adapt to the material, familial, educational and spiritual needs of families. |
