| Summary, etc. | Un certain nombre d’initiatives mutualistes en faveur de l’enfance malheureuse, apparues entre le dernier tiers du XIXe siècle et le premier tiers du XXe siècle, présentent une dénomination officielle ou courante contenant le mot « orphelinat ». Alors que la tradition de l’enfermement des orphelins demeure toujours prépondérante, ces œuvres font pourtant le choix du placement familial. Les orphelinats mutualistes viennent généralement en aide aux enfants de leurs membres décédés au moyen d’allocations. Si certaines sociétés peuvent posséder un établissement, elles parviennent néanmoins à développer des modalités d’assistance nouvelles qui participent au débat sur la remise en cause de l’éducation collective. |

| Summary, etc. | Mutual Society Orphanages (1860-1930): Children’s Aid without WallsA number of mutual society initiatives to aid orphans, which emerged between the latter third of the nineteenth century and the first third of the twentieth, contained the word « orphanage » in their official or unofficial names. Although the tradition of institutionalising orphans was still predominant, these charities tended to favour placement with families. The mutual society orphanages tended to support the children of their deceased members through allowances. Although some mutual societies did own orphanages, they nevertheless developed new forms of assistance that contributed to challenging collective childrearing. |
