| Summary, etc. | Cette contribution souhaite montrer que l’institution mutualiste, en raison de son importance et de son organisation dans la trame urbaine grenobloise, s’est imposée au milieu du XIXe siècle comme un acteur incontournable en matière de régulation du social. En raison de l’organisation de leurs associations, les mutualistes possèdent un savoir fin sur l’état des catégories populaires. En 1842, la municipalité fonde le Conseil supérieur des sociétés de bienfaisance mutuelle. Pensé comme un instrument de contrôle et de régulation de l’activité mutualiste, il se transforme rapidement en un outil de collaboration entre les mutualistes et la municipalité. Cette collaboration institue un système social original dans lequel le savoir mutualiste est indispensable. Ce système n’est pas pour autant épargné par des mouvements de contestation interrogeant la légitimité de l’intervention municipale dans la vie des sociétés de secours mutuels. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper seeks to demonstrate that the mutualist institution, through its scale and organisation in the urban tissue of Grenoble, became a key player in social regulation in the mid-19th century. Owing to their organisational structure, mutualist entities possess in-depth knowledge of the conditions of the working classes. The municipality of Grenoble founded the Conseil supérieur des sociétés de bienfaisance mutuelle in 1842 with a view to controlling and regulating mutualist activity. The Conseil soon became a resource for collaborative efforts between mutualist companies and the municipality. These efforts led to the emergence of an original social system in which mutualist knowledge proved essential. However, the system was contested regarding the legitimacy of municipal intervention in the running of mutual aid companies. |
