| Summary, etc. | Résumé En s’appuyant sur le cas concret de la vie d’Édouard Desor (1811-1882), cet article s’attache à démontrer la richesse des potentialités heuristiques d’un exercice renouvelé de la biographie de savant. Entendue comme une forme de microhistoire, la biographie offre en effet un cadre cohérent à l’association de perspectives et d’approches méthodologiques très variées sur le passé de la science. La nature spécifique des sources historiques manipulées dans un tel exercice permet de s’affranchir des distorsions interprétatives de l’ancienne histoire des idées, et de poser les problématiques en fonction des interrogations et des préoccupations réelles des acteurs historiques. Retraçant la science passée telle qu’elle a été vécue par les savants, le biographe peut dès lors rétablir sa place réelle dans l’enchevêtrement des logiques sociales à laquelle elle participe. Selon la diversité effective des activités et des engagements du savant pris en considération, il est ainsi possible de mettre en lumière les dynamiques qui gouvernent les relations entre la politique, la religion, la science, etc. Et au sein de l’activité scientifique de son sujet, le biographe peut enfin dégager les liens qu’entretiennent la recherche fondamentale, la recherche appliquée, les politiques de la recherche et les entreprises de vulgarisation. |

| Summary, etc. | Based on the case-study of Édouard Desor’s life (1811-1882), this article aims to show the wealth of heuristic potential of a renewed practice of scientific biography. Understood as a form of « microhistory », biography actually offers a consistent structure to the combination of very diverse methodological approaches and viewpoints on the history of science. The specific nature of his documentation protects the biographer from the interpretative biases of the traditional history of ideas, and allows him to set his problems according to the real questions and concerns of the historical protagonists. Relating science as it was lived and practiced by the scholars themselves, the biographer is able to establish its effective place, within the actual entanglement of social factors that interact with all cognitive undertakings. According to the diversity of the subject’s activities and commitments, it is thus possible to highlight the dynamics which rule the connections between science, politics, religion, etc. And within science itself, the biographer can clear up the relations shared by applied research, basic research, politics of science, and scientific popularization. |
