Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The malagasy scholars of colonial days are undeniably the true heirs of Madagascar’s first historian, Raombana (who died in 1855). Like him, they were taught by the anglo-saxon missionaries of the LMS (London Missionary Society). Their intellectual contribution to Malagasy culture and history helped towards the establishment of an « imagined community ». It was an answer to the challenge of colonisation. The Malagasy Academy founded in 1902 by governor Gallieni, was meant to counterbalance the English influence and, in time, win over the most outstanding amongst them. And indeed, they slowly took over the Academy and were actually ruling it by the time of the Independance. But those scholars also thrived in protestant and nationalist networks. Soon after the end of the World War II, knowledge became more rigorous, a trend only to be confirmed by the opening of the University of Madagascar in 1960. |
