520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. To understand the intellectual atmosphere of the 1950s and 1960s, one must first grasp the passions of the era : a chance to observe a fundamental change in world political order and the need to develop entirely new conceptions of societies once thought to be static and primitive. Such thinking emerged first not in the academy but in colonial bureaucracies confronted with social and political movements in Africa during and after the war. This article describes the way officials rethought social order and how social scientists later took up and promoted new modes of analysis. It focuses on two examples : development economics and modernization theory. But it notes the caution of scholars doing fieldwork, who observed a more complex reality. Scholars responded to demands for useful knowledge before the knowledge base was secure, but even so they helped consolidate new visions of social change.
