| Summary, etc. | RésuméÉcrivain, naturaliste, linguiste, ethnographe, Georg Forster (1754-1794) a observé les populations humaines lors du voyage de Cook dans le Pacifique sud (1772-1774). Dans Encore quelque chose sur les races humaines (1786), il critique les hypothèses anthropologiques d’Emmanuel Kant et questionne la théorie de l’unité de l’espèce humaine (monogénisme) dans la mesure où, sous couvert de science, cette théorie se fonde sur des présupposés métaphysiques ou religieux. Le texte mobilise avec compétence non seulement les observations directes de Forster mais aussi l’ensemble des données de l’anthropologie et de l’histoire naturelle de l’époque. Il ouvre ainsi une brèche à l’intérieur du discours anthropologique en cours de constitution. La « querelle du monogénisme et du polygénisme » qui s’ensuit nourrit pendant plus d’un siècle les débats sur l’anthropologie physique cherchant à s’instituer en science positive. |

| Summary, etc. | A writer, naturalist, linguist and ethnographer, Georg Forster (1754-1794) observed human populations during Cook’s journey to the South Pacific (1772-1774). In Something More About Human Races (1786), he criticizes Immanuel Kant’s anthropological hypotheses by casting doubt on the « unity of human species » theory (monogenism) insofar as, under the guise of pure science, it lays its foundations with metaphysical and religious postulates. This text skillfully articulates not only Forster’s direct observations, but also all the contemporary anthropological and naturalistic data. The subsequent « monogenism versus polygenism » issue has fostered debates about physical anthropology for more than a century while the latter tries to become a positive science. |
