| Summary, etc. | RésuméEn 1899, alors que le journalisme ne s’est pas encore professionnalisé ni la sociologie institutionnalisée, Dick May, une femme de lettres « convertie » à la science sociale, crée la première école de journalisme en France dans le cadre d’une école consacrée à « l’enseignement social ». Dans un pays en crise après la séquence boulangiste, l’affaire des « chéquards » de Panama et l’affaire Dreyfus, l’enseignement et la diffusion des sciences sociales apparaît au milieu progressiste de la petite bourgeoisie intellectuelle parisienne comme un moyen de participer à la régénération de la société française. La science et la raison devaient nécessairement réconcilier avec elle-même une nation divisée : « d’ici à dix ans, nos étudiants auront couvert la France de missions laïques et transmis jusqu’au fond des provinces notre parole de vérité ». Inscrite dans le mouvement des Universités populaires, les institutions créées par Dick May échoueront à populariser véritablement un « enseignement social », alors que les durkheimiens choisiront d’inscrire la sociologie dans un cadre universitaire. |

| Summary, etc. | In 1899, when journalism was not yet « professionalized » and sociology not yet institutionalized, Dick May, a woman writer who became converted to the social sciences, founded the first French school of journalism within the framework of a school devoted to « social teaching ». France was in crisis after the Boulangism, the political and financial scandals of Panama and the Dreyfus Affair. The progressive Parisian intellectual middle class believed that teaching social sciences was one way to regenerate French society. Science and reason would necessarily help the nation to unite once again : « in ten years, ours students will have covered our country with lay missions and transmitted our word of truth to all the provinces ». Initially part of the Popular University movement, the School of Journalism of Dick May will not reach its aim, when Durkheim and his friends introduce sociology at the University. |
