| Summary, etc. | RésuméDès sa création, l'UNESCO entreprend un ambitieux projet intellectuel : celui de faire écrire collectivement par des savants du monde entier une « Histoire de l'Humanité ». Ce projet s?inscrit au carrefour de différentes influences historiographiques, entre « histoire universelle » et World History ; il constitue une entreprise novatrice, à la pointe d?approches et de concepts alors à peine naissants, comme les Area Studies, les Peace Studies ou l'histoire culturelle. L?analyse des étapes de son élaboration permet de saisir ce projet comme un révélateur de son temps : l'universalisme, le positivisme et le pacifisme qui président à son lancement sont caractéristiques de l'atmosphère de l'immédiat après-guerre ; les années 1950-1960 confèrent aux débats les accents de la guerre froide et la question coloniale donne lieu à l'expression de vues divergentes. Les difficultés et les importantes évolutions conceptuelles que connaît le projet au fil de sa réalisation (1945-1969), ainsi que les nouveaux changements apportés lors de la révision de l'ouvrage (2000), attestent qu?écrire une « histoire de l'humanité » est une entreprise vouée à rester un work in progress. |

| Summary, etc. | From its creation, UNESCO undertook a challenging project : a « History of Mankind » to be written by scholars from the whole world. This enterprise was innovative. It was in line with many historiographical trends, like « universal history », but also (then) new trends like « world history », « area studies », « peace studies », « cultural history ». Through the many steps of its realization, this project is revealing of its time: universalism, positivism and pacifism which inspired its setting up are a feature of immediate post-war period; in the 1950s and 1960s, cold war and colonial questions aroused fierce disagreements and conflicts among its writers. Along its realization (1945-1969), the project met difficulties and it underwent important evolutions in its guidelines. Besides, long-range changes were executed when the book was revised in 2000. This attests that writing a « History of Mankind » is doomed to always remain a « work in progress ». |
