| Summary, etc. | RésuméÀ partir des résultats préliminaires d’une étude sur la genèse des espaces touristiques au Portugal, entre la fin du xixe siècle et les années 1930, cet article propose de recourir à l’œuvre de Michel de Certeau pour interroger les fondements et les limites du champ de recherche couvert par l’histoire du tourisme. Pour les historiens, les touristes reproduisent avant tout des parcours et des actes sans innover. Les propres documents mobilisés pour écrire l’histoire du tourisme – des guides, des récits de voyage rapidement constitués en genre littéraire, la documentation des administrations locales ou nationales chargées de la promotion du tourisme – amplifient cette idée de normalisation de l’activité touristique en passant sous silence la diversité des pratiques individuelles. En partant d’une réflexion sur la construction de l’objet « tourisme » en histoire, cet article cherche à définir une approche qui permettrait d’observer l’influence variable et diversifiée des pratiques dans l’élaboration des discours qui structurent le phénomène touristique. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper aims to use the work of Michel de Certeau to examine the foundations and limits of the research field covered by the history of tourism. It is based on preliminary results of a study on the making of touristic spaces in Portugal from the late 19th century to the 1930s. From the historians’ point of view, tourists largely reproduce their routes and practices without innovating. Specific documents have been used to write the history of tourism, such as guides, travelogues rapidly accepted as a literary genre, and documentation of local or national authorities in charge of promoting tourism. These documents have enhanced this idea of standardized tourism activities, concealing the diversity of individual practices. Going from a reflection on the construction of the « tourism » object in history, this article seeks to observe the varying and diverse influence of practices in the development of discourses structuring the tourism phenomenon. |
