| Summary, etc. | Ce travail est consacré à la rencontre entre la philosophie canguilhémienne et la biologie moléculaire. Nous montrons que durant la seconde moitié des années 1960, Canguilhem fut moins gêné par le réductionnisme mécaniste de cette nouvelle biologie qu’il ne fut enthousiasmé par ce qu’elle semblait impliquer sur le plan de la théorie de la connaissance. Prenant au pied de la lettre l’idée alors très en vogue que la vie était langage, il pensa un temps pouvoir identifier le concept et la vie et ainsi réactiver une certaine forme de néo-aristotélisme. Cette perspective paraissait à même d’offrir une solution au problème de la connaissance de la vie, problème qui était au fondement de sa démarche philosophique depuis au moins le début des années 1940. Nous montrons ensuite que Canguilhem changea d’avis dans les textes qu’il publia après 1970. Discrètement, mais incontestablement, il renonça à la portée gnoséologique de la biologie moléculaire pour laquelle il avait nourri tant d’attentes quelques années auparavant. Ce revirement doit beaucoup, selon nous, à la lecture du livre de François Jacob, La Logique du vivant. |

| Summary, etc. | The present article aims at rethinking the impact of molecular biology on Canguilhem’s philosophy. I first show that, during the late 1960s, Canguilhem, far from being upset by the reductionism and mechanism of this new biology, was instead enthusiastic because of its possible implications at the level of the theory of knowledge. Taking literally the then very appealing idea that life was language, he thought possible to equate life and concept and thus to revive a kind of neo-Aristotelianism. Such an account was supposed to pave the way for a possible solution to the problem of the knowledge of life that motivated his philosophical enquiry since at least the early 1940s. I then show that Canguilhem changed his mind after 1970. Discreetly but unquestionably, he renounced the idea that molecular biology could have a revolutionary impact on the theory of knowledge. This shift, in my view, is the consequence of Canguilhem’s careful reading of François Jacob’s book, The Logic of life. |
