Considering that all ghettos were enforced societies that the Jews despised, a few major issues will be discussed :The concept of the ghetto and its origins in each of the placesThe degree of violence and arbitrary actions in the establishment and the control over the ghetto by the ruling authorities, Germans, Romanian, etc.The interdependence between the external factors such as the formal authorities — Romanians and Germans, the non Jewish population, and the economic needs and the ability of Jews to respond without jeopardizing their survivalThe Jewish society, its leadership, and the efforts of individuals not to despairThe article draws on the structure and experience of different ghettos, keeping in mind that in many aspects each ghetto was particular. Even neighboring ghettos in the same region differed greatly. |
