| Summary, etc. | L’article analyse les pratiques de commémoration de la guerre de 1914-1918 (rapatriement des dépouilles, culte de noms, monuments aux morts, cérémonies) dans la situation coloniale algérienne des années 1920 et 1930. Partant du constat que la formule de l’ « Union Sacrée » avait revêtu une signification politique bien spécifique en Algérie, dans le contexte des débats sur la « conscription indigène » et sur la contribution des colonisés à la guerre, l’article examine les enjeux tout aussi particuliers de la mise en place des commémorations de la guerre et de ses morts. En révélant les interactions conflictuelles de plusieurs acteurs, français comme algériens, il montre que ces formes commémoratives ont servi à renégocier l’ordre colonial dans l’entre-deux-guerres. De cette manière, cet article constitue non seulement une contribution à une histoire mondiale de la Première Guerre mondiale et ses retombées, mais révèle une dimension importante de la culture politique franco-algérienne de l’entre-deux-guerres. |

Commemorating the Great War in Colonial Algeria (1918-1939) This article examines commemorative practices regarding World War I (repatriation of the dead bodies, cult of names, war memorials, ceremonials) within the Algerian colonial situation of the 1920s and 1930s. It argues that the formula of “Sacred Union” (Union Sacrée) took on a specific political meaning in interwar Algeria, marked by the fierce debates surrounding the “conscription of natives” and the contribution of the colonized population to the war effort. Analyzing the specific struggles evolving around the different elements of World War commemoration and the conflictive interactions between different groups of actors (French and Algerian), the article reveals that these symbolic forms constituted an important arena in which the renegotiation of colonial rule in interwar Algeria took place. |
