Dans une cité en plein essor comme Bordeaux, l’appétit de jouissance transformait la gestion des distractions en un enjeu pour les pouvoirs comme pour les entrepreneurs de loisirs. Parallèlement à la multiplication des tripots, cabarets et autres maisons de jeux, on découvre une multitude de grands projets. L’heure était aux jardins, au Wauxhall, véritable parc de loisirs au XVIIIe siècle. Les élites qui souhaitaient policer la ville des Lumières, avaient en partie gagné. |

| Summary, etc. | Games and leisures in 18th century Bordeaux Leisures were a prominent feature of the social life in 18th century seaports. Bordeaux was a thriving city, rife with the quest for pleasure, and the purveyance and control of recreational activities was of the highest importance for local authorities and leisure entrepreneurs alike. If cabarets and betting and drinking places could be found in abundance, there was also a wealth of grandiose projects: these were the days of public gardens or Wauxhalls – the true leisure parks of the 18th century. The policing of the Enlightened city, sought after by the local elites for so long, had been achieved, even if only partially. |
