| Summary, etc. | La croissance démographique a repeuplé les villes byzantines, et Constantinople en fut, de loin, la principale bénéficiaire à partir du Xe siècle. Cette renaissance des activités urbaines coïncida avec le retour des troubles urbains, qui avaient quasiment cessé depuis l’avènement d’Héraclius. Au cours du XIe siècle et à la fin du XIIe, les émeutes provoquèrent la chute de plusieurs empereurs. Les corps de métiers de la capitale jouèrent un rôle prépondérant, mais n’eurent pas de programme politique et servirent les ambitions politiques de la haute aristocratie. Toutefois, les empereurs veillèrent à ne pas heurter leurs intérêts économiques en évitant de trop favoriser la concurrence des marchands étrangers et en limitant leurs exigences fiscales croissantes. |

| Summary, etc. | The wrath of the crowds in Byzance (10th-12th century) Demographic growth renewed the population of Byzantine cities, and thereby Constantinople was by far the greatest beneficiary from the 10th century on. This renaissance of urban activity brought with it the return of urban problems, which had virtually ceased to exist with the advent of Heraclius. In the course of the 11th and at the end of 12th century, these troubles caused the downfall of several emperors. The craftsmen’s guilds of the capital played the major role, but they had no political programme of their own and served the political ambitions of the grand aristocracy. For their part, the emperors took care for their economic interests by avoiding excessive competition from foreign merchants and by limiting their ever-growing fiscal exactions. |
