| Summary, etc. | En automne 1938, le grand quotidien parisien Paris-Soir intente un procès pour diffamation contre l’hebdomadaire catholique genevois L’Écho Illustré qui l’a traité de « pourrissoir ». L’affaire est plaidée en été 1939 et le journal français est débouté avec pertes et fracas, sous les sarcasmes de la presse locale qui, tous bords politiques confondus, a pris le parti de son confrère catholique. Pour incongru qu’il paraisse, ce procès cristallise l’exaspération grandissante des éditeurs de journaux suisses romands face à la concurrence des journaux français — au point qu’on parle d’« envahissement » et qu’on oppose volontiers un modèle de journalisme national, propre et honnête, à un modèle étranger, peu scrupuleux et porté au sensationnalisme. |

| Summary, etc. | An unlikely trial: Paris-Soir vs. L’Écho Illustré (1938-1939)In the autumn of 1938, the great French newspaper Paris-Soir brought an action for slander against the small Swiss Catholic weekly magazine L’Écho illustré, which had called it “rotten” (“pourrissoir”). But the court found the aggressive magazine not guilty, and the French newspaper became the target of constant mockery from the Swiss press. This strange affair is a good example of the growing exasperation felt by local editors towards the successful competition of French newspapers. The latter were described as unscrupulous and tabloid-like, as opposed to Swiss newspapers, depicted as reliable and decent. |
