| Summary, etc. | La large victoire de Jair Bolsonaro à l’élection présidentielle de 2018 a causé la sidération. Avec cet ancien parachutiste, capitaine de réserve, c’est l’extrême droite militaire qui est revenue au pouvoir au Brésil, près de quarante ans après la fin de la dictature (1964-1985). Au terme de son mandat, marqué notamment par une gestion catastrophique de la pandémie de Covid-19, le président est impopulaire et a perdu une bonne part de sa crédibilité sur le plan national comme international. Ses chances de réélection lors du prochain scrutin prévu en octobre 2022 semblent donc pour l’heure plutôt compromises. Il n’en demeure pas moins que le « bolsonarisme » marque une inflexion importante de la vie et de la culture politiques brésiliennes, qui pourrait s’installer durablement. |

| Summary, etc. | Jair Bolsonaro’s resounding victory in the 2018 presidential election came as a shock. With this former paratrooper and reserve captain at the helm, the military far right is back in power in Brazil – almost 40 years after the end of the dictatorship. At the end of his mandate (marked in particular by catastrophic handling of the Covid-19 pandemic) the president is unpopular – and has lost much of his credibility, both at home and abroad. His chances of re-election in the upcoming presidential elections (October 2022) therefore seem somewhat compromised for the time being. The fact remains, however, that ‘Bolsonarism’ marks an important turning point in Brazilian political life and culture that could well prove long-lasting. |
