| Summary, etc. | Si l’invasion de l’Ukraine, le 24 février 2022, a surpris certains observateurs, elle ne fut pas un coup de tonnerre dans un ciel serein. Le pays n’a jamais vraiment cessé d’être, aux yeux de son puissant voisin, la « Petite Russie », une région destinée à revenir dans le giron de Moscou malgré son choix d’indépendance en 1991. Les trois dernières décennies ont vu, à plusieurs reprises, les velléités d’émancipation politique ukrainiennes contrariées, voire réprimées, par la Russie. La guerre en cours semble constituer le résultat d’un long cheminement vers l’affrontement ouvert entre les deux États. |

| Summary, etc. | The invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 may have surprised some observers, but it was no thunderbolt from the blue. Despite its choice of independence in 1991, this “little Russia”, as its powerful neighbour continues to see it, has always been destined to return to the Moscow fold. As the past three decades have shown, Ukrainian aspirations to political emancipation have been repeatedly thwarted, and even suppressed, by Russia. The war currently underway seems to be the result of a long road to open confrontation between the two states. |
