| Summary, etc. | Métal né dans les laboratoires, l’aluminium ne fut pas d’emblée appliqué à la fabrication des câbles électriques, et ce malgré ses propriétés bien connues de légèreté et de conductibilité. La puissante et prospère industrie française de l’aluminium n’ignorait rien des expériences d’Alcoa outre-atlantique sur des conducteurs en aluminium dès 1907. Mais l’usage de l’aluminium entrait en concurrence avec celui du cuivre, très spéculatif. Il fallut tout le travail du cartel L’Aluminium français pour que les recherches, entreprises avant 1914, soient accélérées dans l’entre-deux-guerres. Au final, les applications aux câbles haute tension du produit Almélec réussirent à s’imposer, à l’inverse ce produit connut l’échec dans les câbles basse tension. |

| Summary, etc. | In spite of its well-known properties of lightness and conductivity, aluminium, a metal stemming from the laboratories was not right a way used for manufacturing the electrical cables. The mighty and prosperous French aluminium industry was undoubtedly aware of the experiments carried out across the Atlantic by Alcoa on aluminium conductors since 1907. But aluminium use was competing with the use of the then very speculative copper. The French aluminium cartel had then to strive for research, launched before 1914, to be accelerated during the interwar period. The outcome was that applications involving high voltage cable for the Amélec product managed to make a name while the low voltage cables met with failure. |
