| Summary, etc. | Comprender los motivos psicológicos y antropológicos del progreso para dominar su curso: este es el proyecto político y moral del Un ensayo sobre la historia de la sociedad civil, publicado por Adam Ferguson en 1767. Siguiendo la axiomática del sentido común de Thomas Reid, Ferguson basó su proyecto en un fundacionalismo naturalista destinado a hacer posible, contra el escepticismo de Hume, la construcción de una ciencia de la naturaleza humana. Así fundado, el discurso antropológico que se despliega en la superficie de Un ensayo pretende poner de relieve las «leyes físicas de la mente» basadas en la observación de las prácticas humanas. Pero al imponer el evolucionismo de una historia «racional» sobre la realidad de los hechos observados, este discurso autorreferencial termina por abolir el objeto mismo de su investigación: el hombre. |
