520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This paper aims at examining the problem of the emergence of the gods and their cults in Lettre de Thrasybule à Leucippe, a clandestine manuscript attributed to Nicholas Fréret. We analyze different theoretical levels of the atheism expressed by Thrasybule, the letter’s fictional author. We reconstruct and examine the process by which, according to Thrasybule, “original humanity” might have created its deities and established worshiping rituals honoring them. We seek to show that although said process entails a certain degree of pessimism concerning the progress of secularization, it also encompasses the idea that superstition need not be an inexorable destiny for humanity.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
