| Summary, etc. | This article analyses the concept of people (pueblo) in language, as a collective identity and as a subject of political representation in the crisis of the Hispanic monarchy from 1808 and throughout the constituent process that culminated in the promulgation of the Constitution of 1812. Based on the discursive uses of pueblo in chronicles, essays on political philosophy, press articles and parliamentary speeches, it points out the relevance of the semantics of pueblo in the political language of the time until its displacement by that of nation. This semantic shift is related to the problems of constitutional engineering derived from the crisis of the privileged nobility in the context of the Napoleonic invasion. The view reinterprets the urban juntas of 1808 by stressing changes in the foundations of sovereignty, and puts into question the conventional characterisation from social history. It also traces the persistence of a rhetoric about the people in the wake of the Cadiz Constitution. Finally, the proposal claims the need to recover the category of people for the narrative of contemporary history. |

| Summary, etc. | Este texto analiza el concepto de pueblo en el lenguaje, como identidad colectiva y como sujeto de representación política en la crisis de la monarquía hispánica desde 1808 y a lo largo del proceso constituyente que culminó con la promulgación de la Constitución de 1812. A partir de los usos discursivos de pueblo en crónicas, ensayos de filosofía política, artículos de prensa y piezas oratorias parlamentarias señala la relevancia de la semántica de pueblo en el lenguaje político de la época hasta su desplazamiento por el de nación. Explica este cambio por los problemas de ingeniería constitucional derivados de la crisis de la nobleza privilegiada como estamento en el contexto de la invasión napoleónica, que observa desde la imaginación del gobierno mixto. En ese recorrido propone una interpretación de las juntas urbanas de 1808 que subraya el cambio en los fundamentos de soberanía, cuestionando la caracterización habitual procedente de la historia social. Y rastrea la persistencia de una retórica sobre el pueblo tras la entrada en vigor de la Constitución de Cádiz. Finalmente deja planteada la necesidad de recuperar la categoría de pueblo para la narrativa de la historia contemporánea. |
