Summary, etc. | In this article we intend to analyze the organization of regulation and inspection of activities related to public health, paying attention to changes in the historical context. In our investigation, we point out the importance of the first great epidemics of yellow fever and cholera in Brazil in the mid-nineteenth century, which contributed to the centralization of the actions of the imperial government. We also consider changes in the provision of health care, identifying the most vulnerable social groups in the slave society. Government documents, legislation and medical writings of the period constitute the main systematized and analyzed sources. |

Summary, etc. | Neste artigo pretendemos analisar a organização da regulamentação e fiscalização de atividades relacionadas à saúde pública, atentando para as mudanças no contexto histórico. Em nossa investigação, apontamos a importância das primeiras grandes epidemias de febre amarela e de cólera no Brasil em meados do século XIX que contribuíram para a centralização das ações do governo imperial. Também consideramos as mudanças na oferta de assistência à saúde, identificando os grupos sociais mais vulneráveis na sociedade escravista. Documentos governamentais, legislação e escritos médicos do período constituem as principais fontes sistematizadas e analisadas. |
