| Summary, etc. | Évoquée dès 1845, l’érection d’un monument en l’honneur de Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, brillant évêque, enfant de Dijon, ne connût pas de réalisation immédiate sans doute en conséquence des évènements de 1848 qui avaient conduit à abriter dans la cathédrale la statue de saint Bernard réalisée dans le même souci de glorifier la ville. Le projet repris avec de puissants appuis civils et religieux en 1853 connut un nouvel échec. Il fallut constater en 1857 que la souscription n’avait pas répondu aux espérances. En 1899, une nouvelle tentative rencontre immédiatement l’enthousiasme du nouvel évêque Albert Le Nordez. La situation politique défavorable, les atermoiements de la municipalité, concernant l’emplacement à choisir et des maladresses du prélat faillirent une nouvelle fois tout faire chavirer. Cependant la ténacité d’Albert Le Nordez permit au monument d’être érigé discrètement dans la cathédrale, alors que le diocèse entrait dans une forte tourmente. Il fallut attendre la fin de la Grande Guerre pour que les pouvoirs publics et le clergé réconciliés s’entendent pour déplacer le monument au chevet de l’église Saint-Jean où il trouve tout son sens. |

| Summary, etc. | The idea of erecting a monument in honour of Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, brilliant bishop and child of Dijon, was mooted as early as 1845, but never came to fruition, no doubt in connection with the events of 1848, which had led to the statue of Saint Bernard, created with the same desire to glorify the city, being housed in the cathedral. The project was resumed with strong civil and religious support in 1853, but failed again. In 1857, it had to be said that the subscription had not lived up to expectations. In 1899, a new attempt was immediately met with enthusiasm by the new bishop, Albert Le Nordez. The unfavourable political situation, the town council's procrastination over the choice of site and the prelate's blunders almost brought the whole thing crashing down again. However, Albert Le Nordez's tenacity enabled the monument to be erected discreetly in the cathedral, at a time when the diocese was in turmoil. It was not until the end of the Great War that the public authorities and the clergy, having reconciled, agreed to move the monument to the bedside of Saint-Jean church, where it now finds its full meaning. |
