| Summary, etc. | Le château d’Arlay (Jura) et les Archives départementales du Doubs à Besançon conservent, en 170 mètres linéaires, l’essentiel des archives de la maison de Chalon fondée par Jean l’Antique au comté de Bourgogne au xiiie siècle et établie dans le royaume de France et en Empire, ceci grâce aux alliances de la branche des Chalon-Arlay, princes d’Orange, et de leurs successeurs jusqu’à nos jours, et par le séquestre révolutionnaire des archives de l’ancienne chambre des comptes des comtes de Bourgogne à Dole. Je limite la présente étude à la partie réputée la plus prestigieuse des papiers de la maison de Chalon : ses titres, détenus dans les places emblématiques des Chalon-Arlay et de leurs successeurs en Franche-Comté : Nozeroy, Lons-le-Saunier, Sainte-Anne, Besançon et Arlay. Leur difficile localisation « aux châteaux » avant le xviiie s. limite la portée archéologique de l’étude. Mais nous saisissons leur séparation des documents de gestion locale, leurs conditions matérielles de transport, de conservation et d’utilisation, leurs contenants et l’aménagement de salle qui leur est dédiée, lors de crises successorales et politiques majeures où procès, enquêtes, traités, pétitions, devis ou mémoires les évoquent comme preuves, supports d’information et enjeux de querelle et de pouvoir ; ils sont alors recherchés, recensés, examinés, transférés, protégés, cachés, saisis. Il en est de même lors du rétablissement de l’ordre puis de la gestion ordinaire des biens. L’exemplarité de la maison de Chalon tient à l’abondance des sources écrites sur cet objet qui permet de connaître le cheminement et l’usage collectif et individuel des documents, sans le recours toutefois à une institution durable, telle la chambre des comptes du roi de France ou des ducs et comtes de Bourgogne, mais grâce à une solide administration locale doublée d’une gouvernance minutieuse par de proches conseillers et juristes des princes. |

| Summary, etc. | Arlay Castle (Jura) and the departmental Archives of Doubs in Besançon keep records in 170 linear meters most of the archives of the house of Chalon founded by John the Ancient in the county of Burgundy in the 13th century and established in the kingdom of France and the Empire, this thanks to the alliances of the branch of Chalon-Arlay, princes of Orange, and their successors until today, and by the revolutionary sequestration of the archives of the former chamber of accounts of the counts of Burgundy in Dole. I limit the present study to the part reputed to be the most prestigious papers of the house of Chalon: its titles, held in the emblematic places of Chalon-Arlay and their successors in Franche-Comté: Nozeroy, Lons-le-Saunier, Sainte -Anne, Besançon and Arlay. Their difficult location “at the castles” before the 18th century limits the archaeological scope of the study. But we understand their separation from local management documents, their material conditions of transport, conservation and use, their containers and the room layout dedicated to them, during major inheritance and political crises where trials, investigations, treaties, petitions, quotes or memoirs evoke them as proof, information supports and issues of quarrel and power; they are then searched for, listed, examined, transferred, protected, hidden, seized. It is the same when restoring order and then in the ordinary management of property. The exemplary nature of the Chalon house is due to the abundance of written sources on this object which allows us to know the progress and the collective and individual use of the documents, without however resorting to a lasting institution, such as the chamber of accounts of the king of France or the Dukes and Counts of Burgundy, but thanks to a solid local administration coupled with careful governance by close advisors and jurists of the princes. |
