| Summary, etc. | L’image de Richard sans Peur donnée par Wace dans son Roman de Rou est celle d’un duc bilingue et biculturel, à la tête d’un duché qui n’a pas encore perdu son identité danoise. À la lumière de la tradition scandinave, et en particulier de la Saga de Grettir, les intrigantes anecdotes ouvrant la Troisième Partie du Rou s’avèrent trahir un discours parallèle au récit officiel, indiquant, parmi les Normands d’origine danoise, l’existence d’une légende de Richard plus ambiguë qu’il n’y paraissait au premier abord, et se conformant à un paradigme narratif commun dans les pays germaniques nordiques. En particulier, la nyctalopie du duc suggère une traduction littérale du concept de glámsýni, donnant à l’anecdote du chevalier tué des connotations d’instabilité mentale menant à la fureur meurtrière. Mise en juxtaposition avec la petite histoire du veneur et de la pucelle, l’anecdote illustre les problèmes d’interprétation de la tradition orale dans une Normandie désormais romane plutôt que scandinave. |

Heroism and cultural mixing in Wace’s Roman de RouWace’s image of Robert the Fearless is that of a bilingual and bicultural Duke governing a territory that had not yet lost its Danish identity. Taking into account Norse traditions and notably the Saga de Grettir, the anecdotes at the beginning of the Third Part seem to betray a more ambiguous version of the legend of Richard for Danish Normans more consistent with that of Germanic peoples. Specifically, the Duke’s dreams suggest the concept of glámsýni, wherein the dead knight’s story conveys mental instability leading to murder. Placed in parallel with the story of the huntsman and the virgin, this anecdote demonstrates the difficulty of interpreting oral tradition in a more Roman than Scandinavian Normandy. |
