| Summary, etc. | Certains patronymes normands proviennent de noms portés par les Vikings qui s’installèrent dans la future Normandie (ou par leurs descendants). Celui de « Turgot » en fait partie et correspond à l’anthroponyme norrois Þorgautr, forgé sur le nom du dieu Þórr. En dépit des erreurs manifestes que commettent les biographes d’Anne-Robert Turgot lorsqu’ils évoquent ses ancêtres, rien n’empêche de conclure que le Ministre de Louis XVI a très probablement de lointaines origines scandinaves. |

| Summary, etc. | The Scandinavian origins of Turgot, baron of the Aulne (1727-1781)Some Norman family names derive from those of the Vikings, or their descendants, who settled in Normandy. “Turgot” is amongst them and corresponds to the Norse Þorgautr derived from the name of the god Þórr. Despite the evident mistakes of many of Anne-Robert Turgot’s biographers in dealing with his ancestors, there is good reason to believe that Louis XVI’s minister probably had Scandinavian ancestry. |
