| Summary, etc. | Le processus d’industrialisation de la région marseillaise au cours de la première moitié du XIXe siècle a longtemps été sous-estimé dans son ampleur comme dans sa précocité. Depuis maintenant dix ans, de nombreuses publications ont permis de combler cette lacune de l’historiographie française et européenne. Atypique et diversifiée, l’industrie marseillaise a su saisir les opportunités offertes par sa double inscription dans les espaces économiques méditerranéen et européen, et offre un remarquable exemple de révolution industrielle durant les années 1831-1865. Le cas marseillais permet de souligner l’importance de la demande comme facteur préalable à la modernisation des industries traditionnelles et met en valeur la nécessaire mise en place de combinaisons entre dynamisme intrinsèque et ouvertures sur l’extérieur afin d’accomplir une profonde transformation industrielle. |

| Summary, etc. | Marseille (1831-1865): an industrial revolution between North of Europa and the Mediterranean area The process of industrialization in the Marseille area during the first half of the nineteenth century has long been underrated in extent as well as in precocity. For about ten years now, publications by numerous economic historians have been filling this gap in French and European historiography. Being atypical and diversified, the industry of Marseille has taken advantage of the opportunities arising from its double insertion in the European and Mediterranean economic spaces and gives a remarkable example of industrial revolution in the 1831-1865 period. The case of Marseille allows to underline the importance of demand as a preliminary factor in modernization of traditional industries and brings out the necessary implementation of combinations between intrinsic dynamisms and openness to the outside in order to accomplish a deep industrial transformation. |
