| Summary, etc. | Douze ans après l’opération de propagande nazie des Jeux olympiques de Berlin, ceux du retour à la paix à Londres en 1948 se voulaient une occasion de promouvoir à nouveau les supposées valeurs sociales et humaines de l’olympisme, d’autant que s’installait la Guerre froide. Dans ce contexte, les performances de l’athlète Julien Le Bas, seul sportif du département de la Manche sélectionné aux premiers Jeux olympiques de l’après-guerre, furent exaltées par la presse écrite et les autorités politiques locales pour en faire une figure d’exemple. Il s’agissait d’affirmer un printemps humain universel par la rénovation de la jeunesse dans un département fortement marqué par l’occupation allemande et les bombardements sur ses villes, en particulier Saint-Lô, ville d’origine du champion, qualifiée à la fois de « Capitale des ruines » et de « Porte de la victoire ». |
