| Summary, etc. | « À l’aide de ses lumières, nous vîmes... » : à propos de la lecture et de la fortune de Caylus. L’auteur cherche à définir le rôle du comte de Caylus, un personnage clé parmi ceux qui ont contribué aux débuts de l’archéologie comme science. Sa recherche se fonde sur le contenu de certains périodiques académiques français parus entre 1765 et 1900, pour tenter de comprendre les réactions des savants des générations postérieures à Caylus, face à ses idées et à son oeuvre. L’auteur relit l’ensemble des jugements et réflexions qui concernent Caylus – dans l’analyse de nouvelles découvertes archéologiques et dans des articles qui traitent des progrès des connaissances, ou dans un débat plus large d’opinions –, ainsi que des textes publiés par des savants qui, venus après lui, sont également considérés comme des pères fondateurs de l’archéologie. L’étude s’attache surtout aux testimonia qui ont contribué au développement d’une méthode de recherche en archéologie, dans un continuum déterminant pour le progrès dans cette discipline. |

| Summary, etc. | « À l’aide de ses lumières, nous vîmes... » : on the reading and reputation of Caylus. The author attempts to define Caylus as a key figure among those who laid the foundations of archaeological science. This is based on the content of French academic journals of 1765-1900, and considers how succeeding generations of scholars have reacted to Caylus and his work. The author has reviewed all the evaluations and comment of scholars referring to Caylus in their analyses of archaeological discoveries and in papers which contributed to the fuller understanding of the subject. Further reading was conducted in works of scholars after Caylus who were also considered founding fathers of Archaeology. Importance was especially attached to those works which contributed to the development of research methodology. The author places these in a continuum which proved a fundamental tool for progress in the discipline. |

| Summary, etc. | L’autore cerca di definire il ruolo di Caylus come personaggio chiave tra quelli che contribuirono allo sviluppo delle prime fasi della scienza archeologica. L’indagine è basata sul contenuto di alcuni periodici accademici francesi editi tra il 1765 e il 1900. Essa prende in considerazione le reazioni che gli studiosi delle generazioni successive ebbero nei confronti del personaggio, delle sue idee e della sua opera. L’autore rilegge il complesso di valutazioni e riflessioni elaborato dagli studiosi che si riferirono a Caylus – in occasione della scoperta di nuovi reperti, del progredire delle conoscenze e dell’ampliarsi del dibattito d’opinioni – e a quegli studiosi che, venuti dopo di lui, erano giudicati padri fondatori dell’Archeologia. Nel corso della rilettura, sono state valorizzate quelle testimonianze di elaborazione critica che furono occasioni per una nuova impostazione metodologica della ricerca, in un continuum determinante per il progresso della disciplina. |
