| Summary, etc. | El libro de John Brewer, The Sinews of Power («El nervio del poder»), tuvo un profundo impacto en la historiografía al proponer la noción de Estado fiscal-militar para arrojar luz sobre la naturaleza del Estado inglés y su relación con la sociedad en el siglo XVIII. Se trata de comprender la asombrosa transformación de un Estado capaz de sostener un esfuerzo bélico cada vez más pesado y costoso gracias a un aumento radical de la fiscalidad y de la deuda pública, y el desarrollo de una administración civil dedicada a gestionar este esfuerzo fiscal y militar de una envergadura sin precedentes, preservando al mismo tiempo las famosas «libertades inglesas». La interpretación de John Brewer fue a la vez eficaz y heurística. |
