| Summary, etc. | RésuméDepuis le début des années quatre-vingt, la RPC s’est engagée dans un programme de réformes doublé d’une politique d’ouverture avec l’espoir de réussir enfin à se sortir du sous-développement. Si cette politique a été maintenue dans ses grandes lignes, elle n’a pas manqué de se heurter à de nombreuses difficultés et de connaître quelques aléas. Pour ce qui est de l’éducation, elle s’inscrivait dans l’urgence puisque le succès des réformes reposait en grande partie sur elle. Elle a dû, elle aussi, se plier aux lois de l’« économie de marché socialiste à la chinoise », et on est passé de la commercialisation du secteur public à l’encouragement d’établissements privés à tous les niveaux de l’éducation. À travers quelques exemples, cet article montre une situation particulièrement complexe, où il est parfois difficile de faire la part entre privé et public car, si l’État communiste se désengage financièrement, il entend bien maintenir son ferme contrôle de l’éducation. |

| Summary, etc. | Education in the People’s Republic of China between state control and market economySince the early 1990s, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has introduced a programme of reform coupled with a policy of liberalisation, in the hope of finally extricating China from under-development. While remaining unchanged along its main lines, this policy has faced a number of diffïculties and suffered some set-backs. The education policy was a matter of emergency, since the success of the reforms was largely based on its implementation. The education policy too has had to adapt to the laws governing the Chinese socialist market economy, and the commercialisation of the public sector was soon followed by encouragements to private schools at all the levels of education. Through a number of examples, this article shows how complex the situation is, and how difficult it is to draw the line between public and private fields of intervention since, although withdrawing financially, the Communist government intends to maintain a strict control over education. |
