Summary, etc. L’exégèse albertienne des versets Jn 1, 19-28 pose le problème philosophique et théologique de la fonction des médiations matérielles dans l’acte baptismal. Le commentaire albertien de l’Évangile de Jean permet de comparer le traitement de cette question dans l’œuvre exégétique d’Albert le Grand et dans ses traités de théologie sacramentaire. Dans le Super Iohannem, Albert le Grand insiste sur la différence entre le baptême d’eau conféré par Jean-Baptiste et le baptême de grâce institué par la passion et par la mort du Christ : à la matière (l’eau) et à l’acte rituel de Jean manque la forme, à savoir la formule trinitaire sanctificatrice, selon le Commentaire du quatrième livre des Sentences qui souligne, pour sa part, davantage l’interdépendance des éléments constitutifs du sacrement baptismal et la continuité entre certains traits du récit évangélique et leur accomplissement dans le baptême instauré par le Christ. Il importe à Albert le Grand de rappeler que le baptême donné par Jean est un signe qui ne possède pas la vertu causale inhérente au sacrement baptismal. Le baptême de Jean annonce en figure le baptême instauré par le Christ dans lequel il s’accomplit. Le rapport entre les deux baptêmes se distingue ainsi de celui de la voix (de Jean-Baptiste), autre médiation matérielle, qui, en énonçant le Verbe, accomplit en acte son avènement sans le différer dans une réalisation future, à l’instar de l’énonciation prophétique.

Summary, etc. Albert's exegesis of Jn 1:19-28 presents the philosophical and theological problem of the function of material mediations in the act of baptism. Albert's commentary on the Gospel of John allows for a comparison of his treatments of this question in his exegetical works and in his treatises on sacramental theology. In his Super Iohannem Albert insists on the difference between the baptism of water conferred by John the Baptist and the baptism of grace instituted by the passion and death of Christ. Lacking to the matter (water) and the ritual action of John is the form, specifically the sanctifying Trinitarian formula. As for his commentary on the fourth book of the Sentences, which goes further in highlighting the interdependence of the elements constitutive of the sacrament of Baptism and the continuity between certain traits of the Gospel narrative and their fulfillment in the baptism instituted by Christ, Albert makes a point of recalling that the baptism given by John announces in figure the baptism instituted by Christ, in which it is fulfilled. The relation between the two baptisms is thus distinguished from that of the voice (of John the Baptist), another material mediation, which, in enunciating the Word, fulfills its coming by action, without postponing it to a future fulfillment.
