520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | In the Physics II 2, 193b35-194a1, Aristotle criticizes in passing the partisans of the Ideas, comparing them to the mathematicians. The present article first attempts to precise the identity of the Academicians Aristotle has in view, and to explain how their method resembles the mathematic one. In a second step, the article sheds light on Simplicius' manner of deflecting the Aristotelian critique, in showing that despite appearances, the Stagirite acknowledges that the forms of natural realities, after the fashion of mathematical realities, can be thought of separately, that is to say, without matter. The Neoplatonist's reflection casts new light on the notion of methexis, basically identical to that of phusikos logos or "form in itself", which is like intelligible Form. |
